A bit arrogant of the metadata compiler not to mention that the conductor was Harty, a major figure, a skilled accompanist, and a very individual Mozartian. Or that the orchestra was the LPO, apparently reduced in size for this recording, and in the first flush of its youth, in 1933. Sammons had led earlier Beecham orchestras, incidentally. We don't all know these things instinctively. But this is a good transfer which doesn't do any sort of violence to the originals, which were recorded in a dry acoustic in any case and can sound rather fierce. Like others of these transfers the music manages to skate almost to the edge of the dreaded digital silence, but not get sucked into it. It's a great pleasure to hear, even in mp3. |
