I had the pleasure of showing my great-grandfather’s cello to Peter Horner in Naples. Despite the instrument’s precarious condition, Peter immediately recognized its potential, and we decided to restore it and bring it to London for auction. The cello (Contino, Naples 1918), perfectly restored, was a great success, becoming the highest-priced Alfredo Contino instrument in the world. Thanks to the professionalism of Peter Horner and Camilla Agnoloni, Brompton’s representative for Italy.

I first met Mr. Peter Horner in Toronto where he inspected my cello and bow. He felt confident they would sell at Brompton’s upcoming auction in London. We were given a general estimate of the selling price and agreed to ship the items to London at our expense. Once received, Brompton’s conducted extensive research and authentication on the cello and the bow. This new information was put into the catalogue resulting in both items selling above asking price. Having no prior experience with the process and being so far away made us feel a bit nervous, however everything went smoothly and exactly as explained through our email correspondence. We were paid on time, minus the expenses outlined in the contract. We felt our experience was excellent in every way.

Despite the fact that I live in another country, Auctioneers at Bromptoms valued an antique violin based on photographs of the labels and other information I sent them. The best, in my opinion, for these types of items.

It is not easy to part with a violin that has been a part of one’s life for almost 50 years. However, the time had come for me to say farewell to it and by good fortune Peter Horner was offering complimentary appraisals in Brisbane.
