Auction Manager

Brompton’s Auctioneers is one of the world’s leading string instrument auction houses; holding 6 auctions a year with additional private sales. We have been operating from our Mayfair offices for many years and are an online auction house; increasing our sales year on year. We are a small team with a Chairman, an Accounts Director, a Specialist and external consultants and are looking for an Auction Manager to compliment this team. The job description and duties are as follows:

  • Auction logistics; including advance planning, room hire, consultant and photographer liaison
  • Full organisation of public viewing days pre-auction; including staffing
  • Website, Facebook and Instagram updates
  • Organising international valuation trips and respective advertising; liaising with designers, advertisers and Director regarding budget
  • Liaison with Brompton’s Asia office – arranging customs paperwork, meet-ups, valuation trips, document entry and stock maintenance
  • Administering condition reports and certificates / documents for auction
  • Liaise with photographer in advance of auctions and ensure all instruments are photographed
  • Full use of auction system database; including responsibility for pre-sale and results of sale documents to clients, taking payment and updating invoices
  • Arranging import and export of overseas instruments; preparing customs paperwork and liaison with shippers
  • CITES and Export license applications and maintenance
  • Receipting contracts and full liaison with US clients  

The ideal candidate will have previous auction house experience; comprehensive administration skills, knowledge of social media promotion, awareness of import and export and CITES procedures. The candidate must have a clean driving licence and valid passport as foreign travel is sometimes required.  Above all be willing to work hard; additional hours when required and to enjoy working in a small, busy company.

Salary £25-30k

Auction House Internship

Paid: 6 months - full time

Brompton’s Auctioneers is one of the world’s leading string instrument auction houses; holding 6 auctions a year with additional private sales. We have been operating from our Mayfair offices for many years and are an online auction house. We are a small team with a Chairman, an Accounts Director, an Auction Manager, a Specialist and external consultants and are looking for an Auction House Intern to assist this team. The job description and duties are as follows:

  • Answering telephone, receiving and collecting clients
  • Maintaining the office online diary – booking appointments for valuations, auction viewing
  • General department administration including organising instruments for collections
  • PA duties for Chairman and Managers; including booking travel and accommodation
  • Social media promotion
  • Office duties as needed
  • Auction viewing assistance including client liaison and administration

The ideal candidate will want to join the classical music world via a busy, small but highly successful auction house. The internship will provide the candidate with a varied office and auction house administration experience. Some travel may be required and additional out of hours working when needed. The ability to play the violin or cello would be an advantage; but not essential.
