B.1540, d. after 1603, Bologna.

Son of Antonio Brensi, a lute, viol and cittern maker, whose surname may well indicate a Brescian origin. At least two violas attributed to Girolamo exist, which exhibit strong Brescian features, but also show some influence of Andrea Amati in the detail. There were no known successors to the family workshop, and violin making in Bologna subsequently ceased until the arrival of Martinus Otti from Fussen in about 1650.
