A strikingly early follower of Amati in Northern Europe, and the most successful and prolific of the Amsterdam school. Possibly a pupil of Francis Lupo (ca 1582-1635). Fine work on several models, which can be a little oversized. Used whalebone in the purfling, and a dark, rich varnish. His workshop passed to his stepson, Pieter Rombouts (1667-1740), who carried out most of the work after 1690. Rombouts later developed a more eccentric style, with strong red varnish and higher archings.
