B.1653, d 1743, Mittenwald

The founder of the still-extant Mittenwald school, he was apprenticed to the German lute-maker Giovanni Railich in Padua and returned to Mittenwald in 1678. From about 1714 he began making violins, developing in the high Stainer style which became the hall-mark of Mittenwald work for more than a century.
