Calcanius, Bernardus

Active 1710- 1750, Genoa.

The best maker of the Genovese school, he was probably introduced to the craft by the Tyrolean maker Martinus Heel, who settled in Genoa around 1700. Generally Amatese in style, somewhat narrow-waisted, but with a good varnish and well-controlled workmanship. His success led to the establishment of several workshops in Genoa in the eighteenth century.
