The best of the post-revolutionary Paris makers. His antecedents were instrument-makers over several generations, possibly even linked to the Lupo family, who provided musicians and makers across Europe from the sixteenth century. Initially worked in the family home in Orleans, but came to Paris in 1794 at the suggestion of Francois Pique. By 1810 he was making quite superb copies of Stradivari??Ts finest work, and establishing a reputation as one of the best makers in Europe at the time. With no sons of his own, his business passed to his pupil and son-in-law Charles Francois Gand.
