Lot Title

An English Violin by James Bamber, Accrington 1876

Description

The violin is accompanied by two handwritten letters from J. B. Vuillaume addressed to Mr. Bamber, dated Paris 1860. It would seem from the correspondence that Mr. Bamber was asking Vuillaume to supply him with instruments to sell as well as wood to make bows and violins, and Vuillaume has responded with a detailed letter giving prices for wood, instruments, and bows. Although James Bamber labels himself as 'maker' there is no mention of him in Henley, so perhaps his nascent business with J. B. Vuillaume came to nothing.
